Hastings New Image

Hastings Borough council have produced a glossy new brochure to try and attract upmarket tourists. They have placed adverts in national magazines and in a new holiday guide. This year they are trying to give the town an upmarket image. Hastings has always been the place to go if you have a family, but they also want to attract people who are interested in culture, heritage and the arts.

Peacehaven Cliff Crumbles

The walkway under the cliffs at Peacehaven were blocked, when large chunks of chalk fell from the 80 foot cliffs at the end of Vernon avenue. It seems that the crumbling of the cliffs could have been caused by the recent wet weather we have had. The area under the cliff is going to be fenced off and made safe, until the council will be able to look at the long term issue of coastal repair.

Stonemason Returns to Work

George Bleach has started working for one of Brightons most historic cemeteries. Mr Bleach a retired stonemason, is going to restore the gravestones of some of Brighton's most remarkable inhabitants. He is working in St Nicholas, in Dyke Road. At the moment he is working on Phoebe Hessel's gravestone, who pretended to be a man and served as a soldier in 1745. She died in 1821 aged 108. Mr Bleach also has the gravestones of Captain Nicholas Tattersell, he helped King Charles II escape to France and Martha Gunn, queen of the Brighton dippers, she set the trend for women to use the beach.

New Leisure Centre for Horsham

Horsham is to get a new leisure centre , it is going to replace the existing 20 year old Swimming Centre. The £13 million project has been helped by a £3.5 million award from the Lottery Commission. The new centre will be one of the most up to date with three pools, an 8 lane conventional pool with variable depth option, a small pool for learners and young children and an outdoor area for those beautiful Sussex sunny days. In addition to the swimming facilities there will be a health and fitness suite, an exciting childrens' activity centre, a large hall that can be used for a wide variety of uses and to help mothers who want to make use of the new facilities, a creche and refreshment area.
This outstanding new centre will more than satisfy the local demand, provide an excellent place for local primary schools to deliver the required swimming lessons and enable more people from the Horsham area to lead a healthier life.

Sports News- Rain hits local pitches

Local sport continues to suffer from the aftermath of the recent heavy rain. With local pitches saturated from the past few months of exceptional rainfall it only take a short shower to make the best of pitches unplayable. Even if not prevented by stanfding water, players who are too keen to return to their weekend activities too soon can do permanent damage to the pitches. While footballers are hanging around kicking their heels, they are probably csting envious looks at the local hockey teams who have a growing number of Astro Turf pitches in the area. Many private schools have their own pitches to add to those of the larger clubs and the ones attached to community Leisure and Sports Centres. Latest addition is the superb £4m facility at Hastings which provides a base for the Priory Cricket Club and South Saxons Hockey Club, together with training areas for local football clubs, restaurant and conference facilities. While the parking arrangements have suffered in the recent rain, the outdoor Astro and indoor Sports Hall provides excellent facilities for keen sports enthusiasts and is well worth a visit.

Hastings 10K race

Hastings 10 kilometre race was voted the best race of its distance in the South by readers of 'Runners' World'. The race which now attracts more than 1000 senior competitors and around 200 juniors will be held on Sunday January 14th. It is likely that as in previous years top honours will go to African runners in the Mens' event, though home grown talent could succeed in the Ladies'.
Weather forecasters are predicting a dry day for the race, though a return to the cold spell of last week could lead to problems for the runners and spectators alike and an increased workload for the local Conquest Hospital! The race will start and end at the Prestigious William Parker Athletics track.

Battle Gets £1m Health Centre

Plans for a new Health Centre in Battle have been confirmed. The new health Centre is going to provide a whole range of community services. It will cater for people living in Battle and the surrounding villages and communities. It is going to be built on the Watch Oak site, which is at present being used by Battle British Legion and WRVS meals on wheels. When these are demolished the new Health Centre and new houses built by Rother Homes will occupy the site. If the lottery bid is successful the Health Centre could include facilities for a range on non-health community projects.

More Objections to Incinerator

East Sussex County Council received 16,000 written comments about it's draft waste plan, which includes it's proposals for Mountfield Incinerator. The public had six weeks to voice their comments, between November 1st and December 12th. Mountfield Heritage Group said that it was an incredible response. The Heritage Group had put out 8,000 leaflets before the consultation period, to encourage people to put forward their views. Most of the comments received were objections to the idea of the incinerator and it's location anywhere in East Sussex. The County Council are studying the comments received and in 2001 will publish a 2nd draft waste plan. The final plan will not be agreed until 2003, if given the go ahead.
